Peterson served as general contractor on a full gut renovation and build-out transforming a long-vacant former Kmart into a modern 70,000 SF Jewel-Osco grocery store at 9548 Wicker Avenue in Saint John, Indiana for DeMao Retail and Agen Development, a repeat client with an ongoing relationship with Peterson across multiple projects. The project rebuilt the vacant big-box shell, delivering Jewel-Osco's newest and most modern store design, the first new Jewel-Osco to open in Indiana in 20 years. The completed store features a full-service grocery selection, an in-store Starbucks, a cafe with indoor seating, and a drive-through pharmacy. Site improvements included construction of a new access road to improve traffic flow at Wicker Avenue. Jewel-Osco, founded in 1899 and a subsidiary of Albertsons Companies, operates 190 stores across Illinois, Northwest Indiana, and Iowa and employs more than 31,000 people. The St. John location employs approximately 150 workers and serves one of the fastest-growing communities in Northwest Indiana. This project reflects Peterson's capability to deliver complex large-format retail conversions for national grocery tenants, executing a full gut renovation of an existing big-box shell into a modern, fully operational retail environment.
